READING ROUTES / 4 STEPS

Turn a reading session into a clear piece of writing

Read with a question, capture a thought, connect the evidence and write a structured draft.

When this route helps

A saved article is not yet an understood argument, and a highlighted book is not yet a useful notebook. This route follows the transition from reading to writing without requiring a complicated research system. Begin with one question and a small set of sources. The output is a short explanation whose evidence you can find again.

  1. 01

    Make the source comfortable to read

    Use Reader where it preserves the material you need, and return to the original page for important figures or interactive elements. Read one section before capturing anything so the note reflects the argument rather than an isolated attractive sentence.

  2. 02

    Capture the source and your response

    Save a short reference, your interpretation and one next question. Keep quotations visibly separate from your own words. Return to the reading instead of reorganizing the whole notebook in the middle of the session.

  3. 03

    Connect the notes around the question

    Create a small index and link source notes to the synthesis. Mark unanswered questions explicitly so the draft does not silently turn an assumption into a fact. Test the links and the access context before sharing anything.

  4. 04

    Give the draft a readable structure

    Move the developed argument into a flowing document. Apply heading styles and generate navigation from that hierarchy. Export the format your reader needs and inspect the actual output.

Bring the steps together

Use Books annotations for ebook sources and Freeform only when spatial comparison helps. The finished writing should stand on its own, with references that support the claims.
