Move to the next device with a checked way back
Understand the backup, verify a sample, transfer the work and retire the old device last.
When this route helps
A device replacement brings several operations close together: backup, synchronization, migration, account changes and erasure. Their proximity makes them easy to confuse. This route puts verification between transfer and retirement so that a successful progress bar is followed by evidence that your actual work is available.
- 01
Identify what the copy contains
Separate synchronized collections from device-backup contents and independent archives. List the important data categories and the method that covers each. A visible item on another synchronized device is not automatically a separate recovery copy.
iCloud sync is not the same thing as a backupBefore you move on: You can explain how each important category would return.
- 02
Check completion and a realistic sample
Inspect the actual completed-backup information and relevant encryption requirements. Where practical, test retrieval of representative material without erasing the source. Record any password dependency privately and securely.
What to check before trusting a device backupBefore you move on: The backup or archive is identifiable and its key dependencies are understood.
- 03
Make the phone handoff deliberate
Transfer, open important material on the destination and confirm account access before following the old-device erase procedure. Keep synchronized deletion separate from preparing a device for a new owner.
Before you sell an iPhone, verify the handoffBefore you move on: The new device performs the important tasks and the old one has not been retired prematurely.
- 04
Verify the Mac through real work
Use Migration Assistant for the appropriate source, then open projects, libraries and essential apps. Check licenses, cloud downloads and external references. Establish the new Mac’s backup before preparing the old Mac for sale.
Move to another Mac with a verification planBefore you move on: The work—not just the files—functions on the new machine.
Bring the steps together
The transfer planner turns your current backup and access situation into a checklist. If a required copy or account route is missing, resolve that gap before erasure.
