An offline map is most useful before you need it. Downloading only the destination town can leave a gap around the airport, the rural approach or an alternate route. Plan the area around the journey you might actually take, not just the place where the hotel pin sits.
Apple Maps offline maps require supported software and are not available in every country or region. The feature arrived with iOS 17. Available directions and place information depend on the downloaded area and supported services; an offline map does not provide live knowledge of every closure or schedule change.
Draw the useful boundary
List the arrival point, accommodation, main activities and a reasonable alternate route. If you will travel between two towns, include the corridor between them rather than downloading two disconnected rectangles and assuming the road is covered.
Balance coverage with storage. A larger region uses more space and takes longer to download. The app shows a size estimate while you adjust the selected area. Make that trade-off while you have reliable Wi-Fi and enough battery, not during boarding.
For a hiking or remote-area trip, treat an offline phone map as one navigation aid. Battery failure, damage and incomplete mapping remain possible. Use equipment and navigation preparation appropriate to the activity rather than assuming a downloaded street map makes every route safe.
Download and name the area
Open Maps, tap your picture or initials near the search field, and open Offline Maps. Choose the add or download-new-map option shown by your version. Search for the relevant place, adjust the boundary and start the download.
Wait until the map appears as downloaded in the list. Rename it to something meaningful if needed, such as “Arrival airport to coast.” A progress indicator or a selected rectangle is not confirmation that the data finished downloading.
Review the map entry to inspect its area and storage size. Resize and download the revised area if a necessary route falls outside the boundary. Keep the original travel requirement beside you so you do not optimize away a useful part of the map merely to reduce the displayed number.
Test the journey, not just the background
Search for the accommodation and a second destination within the downloaded area. Inspect the route options and a place card. Then use the app's Only Use Offline Maps option, where available, to check what the downloaded data can provide without relying on the online map.
A brief offline test is useful because the map background can look complete while a particular search or route remains unavailable. Return to ordinary online behavior afterward if that is your intended everyday setting. Record any gap that requires a separate saved address or another navigation source.
For an example, download the airport, hotel and connecting road. Test the hotel by its street address as well as its business name. Save the address in a separate note or document that you can open offline. A business name may change; the address gives you another way to identify the destination.
Review automatic behavior
Automatic updates can refresh downloaded maps when connectivity allows. Check the relevant setting before departure, particularly if you downloaded the area long ago. Do not assume the map is current merely because it remains listed.
Optimize Storage can remove unused offline maps after a period. Decide whether that behavior fits a future trip and inspect the list again shortly before leaving. A download you verified months ago is not evidence that it is still on the phone today.
Choose whether downloads may use cellular data according to your connection and plan. This is a data-usage decision, not a requirement to buy additional service. A large download over an unreliable connection may fail or remain incomplete even when some map tiles are visible.
Distinguish offline facts from live conditions
| Information | What an offline map can help with | What still needs judgment |
|---|---|---|
| Streets and saved-area navigation | Finding a route within supported coverage | Recent closures or unsafe local conditions |
| Business details | Viewing downloaded place information | Whether hours or services changed afterward |
| Transit planning | Supported route information in the saved area | Live disruption and current departure conditions |
| Arrival estimate | A calculated estimate for the available route | Unusual traffic, stops and conditions not reflected offline |
If a route cannot be calculated, first check that both endpoints and the route corridor are inside the downloaded area. Then check whether the travel mode is supported there. Repeatedly restarting the phone will not add a missing region to the download.
Leave with a small fallback plan
Keep the accommodation address, a contact method and any critical booking information accessible separately. Confirm your charging arrangement and enough free storage for the rest of the trip. Offline navigation and a nearly empty battery are not a useful combination.
After the trip, remove the map through Maps if you no longer need it. Keep it only when it serves a foreseeable journey. A deliberately chosen, tested map is more useful than a collection of old regions whose coverage you cannot remember.
