Share a Live Photo without accidentally losing the moment

Decide whether the recipient needs motion, a still frame or an original you can keep editing.

A Live Photo is more than its thumbnail

A Live Photo includes a brief moment around the shutter press, including audio. The still frame in your library is only one representation of it. This is why a photo can look correct after sharing while the movement you wanted to preserve has disappeared. Before choosing a sharing method, decide which part matters: the key still, the moving moment or an original suitable for later editing.

This guide uses Photos on iPhone, with receiving behavior depending on the destination app and device. Live Photos are not supported in every camera mode, and non-Apple destinations may receive a still image or need a video copy. Do not assume a service supports motion merely because it accepted the file.

Inspect the original before sharing

Open the item in Photos and press and hold to play it. Listen as well as watch. The audio may contain a private conversation or a name spoken just outside the visible scene. Review that before sending the motion version. A still frame can be the more appropriate choice even when the motion is technically available.

If the displayed key frame is unhelpful, open Edit, choose the Live Photo controls and select another frame as the key photo where offered. Inspect the motion after editing. The best still frame and the best short moving sequence are not necessarily the same choice; do not judge the whole item only by its thumbnail.

Choose the representation for the recipient

In Photos, use Share and inspect the Live control and available options before sending. Turning Live off for the share sends a still representation through supported paths. Apple notes that Mail sends a Live Photo as a still image. That can be appropriate for a picture but wrong for a motion handoff.

To make a video copy, open the Live Photo, use the More menu and choose Save as Video where available. Some applied effects or edits can affect which options appear; inspect the current item and keep the original while making the copy. Open the new video in Photos and play it before sending it onward.

A practical family-sharing example

Suppose the valuable part of a picture is a child's brief wave before the posed photograph. One relative uses a compatible iPhone and another uses a service that displays only ordinary videos. Send the first relative a supported Live Photo transfer and ask them to press and hold after saving it. Create a video copy for the second relative and verify the wave and audio in that copy.

For a printed card, choose the still frame separately. These are three deliveries from one moment, each serving a different purpose. There is no need to force the print recipient to understand Live Photos or to send an original with editing data to someone who only needs a small video.

Check what arrived, not what left

Ask the receiving person to open the saved result, not merely look at the message preview. A chat thumbnail may not show the complete behavior. On a Mac, inspect the received item in the relevant app; in a file archive, look for the expected components. A transfer marked complete confirms transport, not that a service preserved every feature.

If motion is missing, identify the sharing path and whether the recipient saved a still preview. Try a supported direct method with one test item or use a video copy when that matches the goal. Repeatedly resending through the same unsupported path will not create support.

Preserve originals separately from social copies

For an archive, use the original-export workflow and keep associated components together. A Live Photo exported as original material can involve a still file and a video file; deleting one because the other looks sufficient can remove part of the original. Naming and folder structure should make the relationship understandable.

A social platform's downloaded copy may be compressed, stripped of information or converted. Treat it as a delivery copy unless you have verified otherwise. The photo archive guide covers a small sample export and reopening check before scaling up to a large library.

Make future captures intentional

If you regularly want stills only, use Camera's Live Photo control and the relevant Preserve Settings option so your choice behaves as expected on later sessions. If you want motion, check the mode before an important scene instead of discovering afterward that another capture setting disabled it. Availability differs by model and mode, including some high-resolution or raw options.

Finally, review location sharing separately. A motion choice and a metadata choice solve different problems. The photo location guide explains how to limit location information in a share without pretending the visible scene or spoken audio reveals nothing about where it was taken.
